  • Zones of Regulation

How do we understand our emotions? At Iceni we have been learning about the ‘Zones of Regulation’. This is a way of recognising and understanding emotions using a child friendly common language. When we are the Green Zone we are feeling calm, focused and ready to learn. When we are in the Blue Zone we might feel tired, sluggish or bored. We have learnt strategies to move between these zones and which helps us to regulate our emotions.

    Pupils say,

‘The Zones have helped me to see how other people feel, to see how many emotions there are and to tell them apart from different feelings’

‘The Zones help me to know how I feel when I am angry or upset’

‘It has helped me realise how fast you can change emotions to different ones and helped me to know how to control them and make sure I don’t always stay in the same emotion’

‘I was in the Red Zone this morning because I lost a game in PE.  I used the slow breathing tool and went to the Blue Zone, through the Yellow Zone and into the Green Zone.  I am now calm and happy’

‘I have enjoyed learning about the Zones of Regulation because it has taught me that everyone has different emotions and we should respect that’
